Digging Deeper: The Root of It! History, Restoration, and Poetry in Anne Spencer's Garden
Anne Spencer Garden
Sat, May 8, 2021
2:30 PM- 4:00 PM
The garden of Harlem Renaissance poet Anne Spencer (1882-1975) is among the most significant examples of preserved African-American gardens in the United States. Anne wrote “this small garden is half my world.” It is indeed a small garden, but the story behind the garden is very big!
Anne Spencer’s poetry was a determining factor in the restoration of the garden, which was undertaken beginning in the 1980s by the Hillside Garden Club. The garden features many original plants, as well as found objects in the landscape that add unique charm. Anne Spencer’s story is not only defined by what’s blooming and the physical structure of the garden, but also by her poetry. Visitors to the garden on Saturday, May 8, will enjoy Spencer’s poetry read by Hollins University professor of English Dr. T.J. Anderson.
Wander through this special garden and enjoy the same charm and ambiance as W.E.B. Du Bois, James Weldon Johnson, Langston Hughes, and other notables enjoyed when visiting the Spencer family.
